— new organ —

Meissen Cathedral has now officially embarked on its “project of the century”. On November 28, 2023, the winner of the tender to build the new organ in Meissen Cathedral was presented to the public.

The consortium Jehmlich Orgelbau Dresden and Weimbs Orgelbau Hellenthal emerged as the winner of the unusual tender with the aim of cooperation in the sense of an East-West encounter.

The Jehmlich-Weimbs team is proud that it was able to convince the public with the jointly developed concept and is looking forward to the realization as soon as the necessary financing has been secured and approved.

The existing Lettner organ will be optimized and supplemented by an organ system with organ sections at three different locations. An organ with 31 stops is planned for the west gallery, divided into Hauptwerk, Positiv and Pedal. A contemporary organ sculpture without visible front pipes is to be created on the basilica yoke. This special design means that this partial organ will not compete with the organ façade on the west gallery. The total of 18 stops, distributed over two divisions and pedal, are located in a common large swell division and are integrated into the overall organ division by means of an individual tone control. This section serves to accompany the congregation and as a tonal link between the west gallery organ and the Lettner organ. An additional smaller organ behind the high altar with a further 11 stops is used to provide music for the services in the high choir and as a remote organ for the entire organ system in the nave. A tubular carillon, a harp (carillon) and a glockenspiel are planned as secondary stops.
