— New organ —
In the center of Oslo is the fortress Akershus.
Part of this fortress is the castle with the Akershus Castle Church.
Akershus Castle was built from 1299 as a castle and royal residence for Håkon V. Magnusson and Queen Eufemia. Since then it has played a central role in Norwegian history as a royal residence, fortress and castle. Today, Akershus Fortress is Norway’s national arena with the National Monument, the Armed Forces Headquarters and the Prime Minister’s Office. It is one of Norway’s largest tourist attractions with approximately 1.6 million visitors annually.
Akershus Castle is the government’s meeting place. Akershus Castle Church has the formal status of Norway’s royal burial church. In everyday life, the castle church functions as the main church for the military stationed there and is used throughout the year for concerts, celebrations and church services.
The last restoration of the church took place in 1932-58 under the direction of architect Arnstein Arneberg.
The previous organ was installed on the west wall of the church by the Norwegian organ and harmonium factory in 1967 and had 15 stops. The instrument no longer met the requirements of the fortress administration, both technically and in terms of sound.
The new organ has 21 stops spread over two manuals and pedal. The key action is mechanical and the electric stop action is supported by a setting system.
